As a dedicated yogini, I’ve been inspired to be creative in all parts of my life, including how I celebrate the holidays. This year, I decided not to have a traditional Christmas tree and instead start my day with the Vrikshasana pose surrounded by holiday decorations. My family enthusiastically supported my creativity, but they still want to maintain the tradition of gifts and their quantity! :)
Here we go—this is my new Christmas tree!
The Vrikshasana Tree: A Symbol of Balance and Growth
Vrikshasana, or Tree Pose, is a foundational posture in yoga that symbolizes stability, growth, and connection to nature. The name comes from the Sanskrit word "vriksha," meaning "tree," and the pose embodies the grace and strength of a tree standing tall. Practicing Vrikshasana means balancing on one leg while placing the other foot on the inner thigh or calf of the standing leg. In my case, I take it a step further by positioning one leg in the Lotus position, with my arms raised overhead to resemble a tree reaching for the sky. And my spread-out fingers represent the needles of a fir tree! :)))
Historical Significance
The origins of Vrikshasana can be traced back to ancient texts such as the Gheranda Samhita, which describes various yoga postures aimed at enhancing physical and spiritual well-being. The pose is often associated with stories of yogis who achieved enlightenment under trees, highlighting their sacredness in various cultures, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.
Why is the Vrikshasana tree a great new Christmas tradition?
